Advani’s commitment: No compromise on terrorism

L.K. Advani in Raipur, Citing the example of the US, Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani said Saturday the party would adopt a 'zero-tolerance policy' on terrorism if voted to power.

United States did not be opposite any terrorist attack after the 9/11 terrorist strike only because it adopted a tough style and policy against terrorists. The BJP too will adopt a tough attitude and adopt a zero-tolerance policy if voted to power,' the party's PM candidate said at a rally at the Gandhi Maidan late evening.

He appealed to the people to vote for 'a nationalist party - BJP - because if BJP wins in this elections, India will win'. 'If you give us an chance at the centre, I will prove that the 21st century belongs to India just as the 20th century was under enemy control by western countries,' the veteran leader told the well-attended rally.

He said the states administrated by the BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners have set an example of good governance, security and development including in Bihar.

Advani showered praises on Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh for bringing in development in the state, which was created in November 2000 by the BJP-led government at the centre, and termed him a good administrator.

Pakistan seeks information of terror risk to Elections of India

Islamabad said Saturday it had sought details from India on the perceived terrorist threat to its general elections.

'We have made a request to the Indian government for intelligence sharing so that all necessary steps could be taken,' Interior Minister Rehman Malik said at a press conference, noting that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken of the threat.

He sharp out that it was for the Indian administration to provide information about the threat. 'We are facing a common enemy,' Geo TV quoted Malik as saying.

'If you give us an opportunity at the centre, I will prove that the 21st century belongs to India just as the 20th century was dominated by western countries,' the veteran leader told the well-attended rally.

'We don't want recurrence of incidents like the Mumbai attacks,' Malik added. Dr. Manmohan Singh's remarks had come during an interaction with women journalists in New Delhi Friday.

North Korea will face U.N. statement

Five permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council and Sixth is Japan, have reached an agreement on a draft statement about North Korea's long-range rocket launch last weekend, envoys said on Saturday.

British U.N. Ambassador John Sawers incorrigible the agreement, which came after a nearly two-hour meeting on Saturday that ended a weeklong deadlock on a Security Council response to North Korea's rocket launch last Sunday.

"We now have an understanding amongst the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Japan on a draft presidential statement to put to the other members of the 0council," Sawers told reporters.

Presidential statements are formal statements of council positions read out by the president of the Security Council. They are generally considered to be weaker than resolutions. U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice declined to disclose any details of the statement but said, "We think this text sends a clear message."

The full 15-member Security Council was expected to receive the draft text at a closed-door meeting scheduled for 6:30 GMT, U.N. diplomats said. The agreement, they said, came after Japan said it would back a U.S.-drafted statement to be issued by the council.

The United States, Japan and South Korea say North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile, not a satellite, in violation of Security Council resolution 1718 banning the firing of such missiles.

The statement does not declare North Korea in "violation" of 1718, diplomats said it suggests the launch was not in conformity with it, a compromise that was acceptable to Beijing.

Japan had been approaching for a council determination that would declare Pyongyang in violation of resolution 1718 but Russia and China, which are undeviating veto-wielding council members, opposed this. They were not convinced the rocket launch, which North Korea says put a satellite into orbit, was a violation.

Muftis give up Delhi for Jammu and Kashmir

The Muftis have let go of national ambitions. Neither former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, nor his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) president, would contest the Anantnag seat for the first time since 1998.

The Muftis have instead official trusted party man Peer Mohammad Hussain, a former minister. The Mufti had won from Anantnag in 1998 but lost the place the following year to the NCP. In 2004, Mehbooba Mufti won it back.

But instead of looking for re-election, the PDP chief on Monday evening announced Hussain's candidature. The Muftis' pulling out of the Lok Sabha election is a clear signal that they want to stay in Kashmir and win back ground lost to the Abdullahs' National Conference (NC).

This also means that the PDP will be a permanent political headache for the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government, which has a very thin majority in the House of 87 - 45 including two Independents. They want to become the " voice of the people in a more determined manner," sources close to the PDP said.

PDP with 21 seats in the legislative assembly profiles itself as a "potent" political power in the state. The father-daughter duo hope that the largest vote share in the assembly elections and aggressive campaigning in the parliamentary polls would yield good results for the party provided there is no rigging of the elections.

" NC leaders have not put out an official reaction to the Muftis not contesting the Lok Sabha polls, but sources in the party said, "They are doing so to bolster the morale of their own party workers as they have already seen writing on the wall." NC leaders feel that the PDP would lose all the three seats, to which the PDP has responded by saying, "It's NC's wishful thinking.” Former CM Sayeed has already started predicting the fall of the "directionless government which has no program at all."

Nuke discussion between US and Iran

US has said it would start conference with Iran over its nuclear program. The decision is has being seen as a further step toward the direct engagement with Iran that US President Barack Obama has promised.

It followed an call to Iran to join in a new round of talks, which would include Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China. It also coincided with an unusual face of conciliation toward the United States by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, reports the New York Times.

Ahmadinejad said Wednesday in a talking in Isphahan that his government would welcome talks with the Obama administration, provided that the shift in American policy was "honest."

The Obama administration's choice is the latest in a series of gestures to Iran, ranging from Obama's videotaped New Year's greeting to the Iranian people three weeks ago to an impromptu encounter last week between an Iranian diplomat and a presidential envoy, Richard C. Holbrooke.

He also briefed them on the administration's broader Iran policy review, which is nearing completion, the State Department said. By showing a readiness to engage Iran, American officials said, the administration is trying to build support among allies like Germany and France, and more skeptical players, like Russia, so that if diplomatic efforts fail, it can marshal support for tougher sanctions against Tehran.
